Five important aspects in self-defense:

Awareness -- who, what, where and why of an attack.
Assessment -- the decisions you make in a situation as well as
what you say.
Avoidance -- the ways that you can make your environment
safer.
Assertiveness -- acting and speaking positively so that you are
not an easy target.
Action -- the physical aspect of defending yourself as well as
taking legal action against the attacker.
